01 / ONE-WEEK RESEARCH
Seven ideas to investigate
Qualitative research priority, not a return forecast or quantitatively proven top-seven ranking. These are overlapping alternatives, not instructions to buy all seven.
XLF overlaps GS and JPM; XLV overlaps JNJ. SHY is a defensive alternative and can lose value. Unqualified slots stay no trade. Dated reference prices are not trade prices; missing stock prices remain unavailable.

XLEState Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF
October 19–23 research window
Tighter crude and distillate inventories keep energy producers worth monitoring. The next official inventory update is a test of whether that support persists. XLE expresses an energy-equity thesis, not a direct crude-oil position.

Evidence
EIA's October 15 release, for the week ended October 9, reported an 8.6-million-barrel commercial crude draw to 415.6 million barrels. Distillates fell 2.5 million barrels and were 12% below their five-year average. Gasoline inventories rose 3.5 million barrels, a counterpoint to uniform tightness.
What could go wrong
Supply restoration, weaker demand or an equity selloff could outweigh tighter inventories. Inventory draws do not establish a cheap valuation or guarantee higher oil prices; producer shares do not track crude one-for-one.
Thesis review trigger
Sustained inventory rebuilding, materially improved supply availability or weaker producer earnings expectations would weaken the case. Record a changed view rather than rewriting the prior thesis.
Research reviewed 2026-10-18. Dated observations are context, not live quotes or entry prices.
Strong client activity and fee generation keep post-earnings operating resilience worth testing. Continued deal activity is the potential catalyst; management optimism alone is not evidence of a favorable one-week return.

Evidence
October 13 results reported $18.68 billion revenue, up 23% annually but down 8% sequentially, and $17.01 diluted EPS. Investment-banking fees rose 21% annually, while the fee backlog declined from Q2 and slightly from year-end. In an issuer-hosted October 15 interview, management remained confident about IPO activity; this was commentary, not revised guidance.
What could go wrong
Results and optimism may already be reflected in the price. Sequential declines, a smaller backlog and higher financing costs could limit follow-through. No verified current-price valuation or market-consensus comparison establishes an advantage.
Thesis review trigger
New evidence of weaker deal completions, client activity or management outlook would weaken the case. A later disappointing outcome must remain in the record.
Research reviewed 2026-10-18. Dated observations are context, not live quotes or entry prices.
The raised annual outlook and an additional regulatory milestone support continued monitoring of product-led growth. Regulatory follow-through is a potential catalyst, with neither approval nor near-term sales assumed.
Reference price unavailable · no paper fill
Read evidence, risks & sources
Evidence
October 13 results reported $25.4 billion sales and raised the annual adjusted EPS midpoint to $11.10. Quarterly GAAP EPS was $0.09; adjusted EPS was $2.59, down 7.5% annually. On October 16, JNJ announced a CHMP recommendation to expand TALVEY combination treatment into earlier-line multiple myeloma. This is not final European Commission approval.
What could go wrong
Litigation, acquisition costs and weaker business segments remain material. The regulatory recommendation does not establish commercial success. The gap between GAAP and adjusted earnings and the quarterly adjusted EPS decline temper the growth thesis.
Thesis review trigger
Adverse litigation developments, regulatory setbacks, weaker product execution or reduced guidance would undermine the case.
Research reviewed 2026-10-18. Dated observations are context, not live quotes or entry prices.
Sector exposure tests whether lending, client assets and selected capital-markets businesses can outweigh uneven earnings. Further earnings and credit commentary are tests of breadth, not known positive catalysts.

Evidence
October 14 peer reports are mixed: Morgan Stanley reported $20.3 billion revenue versus $18.2 billion a year earlier and $232 billion wealth-management net new assets. Bank of America reported $6.9 billion net income versus $8.3 billion, including a $1.2 billion regulatory settlement charge; investment-banking fees fell 11%.
What could go wrong
Fresh evidence weakens an uncomplicated sector-wide strength claim. Inflation, funding costs, credit losses and regulatory charges matter. XLF overlaps GS and JPM, so these ideas do not represent independent diversification.
Thesis review trigger
Broader deterioration in credit quality, margins or business outlooks would undermine the sector thesis. Retain the downgrade and any unfavorable later evidence.
Research reviewed 2026-10-18. Dated observations are context, not live quotes or entry prices.
Lending and deposit growth support a resilience argument, while credit costs provide a concrete test. Subsequent credit and revenue commentary could change the view; no new common-stock earnings catalyst is assumed.
Reference price unavailable · no paper fill
Read evidence, risks & sources
Evidence
The October 13 release reported $15.3 billion net income and $5.57 GAAP diluted EPS. Average loans rose 10% and deposits 8% annually. Credit costs were $2.7 billion, including a $539 million reserve build. The differently adjusted $5.75 EPS figure is not used as GAAP earnings.
What could go wrong
Inflation and rate pressure can harm borrowers or valuations. Management reported reduced repurchases and concerns about the economic backdrop. Strong year-over-year figures do not prove an earnings surprise or favorable next-week return.
Thesis review trigger
A materially weaker credit or revenue outlook, or accelerating credit deterioration, would weaken the case.

XLVState Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF
October 19–23 research window
Test whether improved company outlooks extend across health-care businesses. Abbott's October 21 results are a forthcoming catalyst whose outcome is unknown; selected company developments do not establish sector-wide strength.
$177.19 USD · Official closing market price reported by issuer; Thursday observation · 2026-10-15Annual expense ratio 0.08%

Evidence
JNJ and UnitedHealth raised annual outlooks on October 13. UnitedHealth reported $4.69 adjusted quarterly EPS and an annual adjusted outlook of at least $20.50. Abbott's September 30 notice schedules results for October 21 before market open. JNJ's October 16 pipeline milestone is company-specific evidence.
What could go wrong
Medical costs, reimbursement, policy and disappointing earnings can outweigh the thesis. An unfavorable Abbott report could weaken sentiment. XLV overlaps JNJ and does not eliminate equity-market risk.
Thesis review trigger
Broader earnings weakness, unfavorable policy changes or deteriorating company guidance would weaken the sector inference.
Research reviewed 2026-10-18. Dated observations are context, not live quotes or entry prices.
One-week observation; not a weekly income-chasing churn strategy
Short Treasury exposure remains a lower-duration comparison to equities and long-dated bonds. It is a defensive alternative whose rate sensitivity must still be tested; holding cash is also a valid choice.
$81.36 USD · Closing market price reported by issuer · 2026-10-16Annual expense ratio 0.15%
Read evidence, risks & sources
Evidence
The issuer reports one-to-three-year Treasury exposure and 1.81-year effective duration as of October 15. September CPI and PPI have now been released; stronger reported inflation replaces the earlier pending-data check and makes a simple bond-price appreciation thesis less persuasive.
What could go wrong
SHY is not cash and can lose value. Rising short-term yields reduce its price, and a week's income may be smaller than modeled transaction costs. Lower duration does not mean no duration risk.
Thesis review trigger
A material rise in short-term yields weakens the near-term price case. Do not invent a yield threshold or execution rule after observing results.

Evidence & review
The fund tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index and held 2,844 positions on September 30. The ten displayed security weights total 34.67%, calculated from the issuer table; two Alphabet share classes are included.
Risks & counterevidence
Many holdings do not eliminate mega-cap concentration or prolonged equity losses. Sampling, small- and mid-cap volatility, liquidity and tracking differences can matter. The refreshed NAV alone is no reason to make a weekly directional call.
Thesis review trigger
Reassess a mandate change, material fee increase or persistent implementation/tracking weakness. A single difficult week does not by itself invalidate a multi-year thesis.

Evidence & review
MSCI EAFE covers large and mid-sized companies outside the U.S. and Canada. The fund held 674 positions on September 30. This benchmark does not supply comprehensive emerging-market or small-cap exposure.
Risks & counterevidence
Unhedged currency exposure, foreign regulation, political developments and liquidity can produce prolonged losses. International diversification is not a guarantee of positive returns or protection in a global equity decline.
Thesis review trigger
Reassess a changed mandate, material fee increase or persistent tracking/implementation weakness. NAV changes alone do not establish a changed long-term thesis.

No minimum at fund level; intermediary requirements and availability must be checked. None in the March 17, 2026 summary prospectus; intermediary fees and fund trading costs can still apply.
Evidence & review
The fund tracks Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index and held 12,277 positions on September 30. Effective duration was 5.8 years on August 31. Its issuer-reported five-year annualized return through September 30 was negative 0.69%; this is fund context, not this website's result.
Risks & counterevidence
Rising yields, inflation, credit spreads and mortgage prepayment or extension can offset income. The historical loss contradicts any capital-preservation claim. The fund itself has no government guarantee.
Thesis review trigger
Reassess a mandate change, material fee increase or persistent tracking weakness. A change in the intended holding horizon or tolerance for duration risk would also require a fresh suitability assessment.

03 / PROSPECTIVE, NEVER BACKFILLED
Every outcome stays visible.
There are zero fills and no completed weekly cohorts. No historical recommendations, backtested successes or investment returns are claimed. No numerical scoring is implemented until the valuation route, pre-entry rules and evidence are verified. The intended entry cutoff is Oct 19, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. New York; this edition itself cannot activate a paper trade.
Review of prior ideas
October 18 qualitative lookback on every October 13 candidate: the stated first research window, October 19–23, has not begun. No prior paper position was activated, so there are no realized research wins, losses, returns or completed cohorts to report. Publication and thesis review do not create a performance record. All prior editions remain retained.
XLE: retain conditionally. October 15 crude and distillate inventory draws add support beyond the earlier oil-price forecast, while rising gasoline inventories are counterevidence. This is a change in evidence, not a measured gain.
GS: retain cautiously. Subsequent management optimism supports monitoring, but the smaller fee backlog and sequential revenue decline remain adverse evidence. No price or valuation advantage was established.
JNJ: retain cautiously. The October 16 CHMP recommendation adds pipeline evidence; it is not final approval. The large GAAP/adjusted earnings gap and declining adjusted quarterly EPS remain concerns.
XLF: weaken the prior bullish view to cautious. Additional bank reports show dispersion rather than uniform improvement. This downgrade stays visible even if later outcomes are favorable.
JPM: retain with heightened macro caution. Lending and deposit growth remain supportive; reserve building, reduced repurchases and the inflation backdrop remain counterevidence. No return was measured.
XLV: retain as an uncertain breadth hypothesis. JNJ's new milestone is company-specific. Abbott's October 21 earnings are still unknown and can contradict the thesis.
SHY: retain only as a defensive comparison. Newly released inflation data weaken a simple bond-price appreciation thesis. Lower duration does not eliminate losses, and cash remains a valid alternative.
SWTSX: retain the multi-year breadth thesis while highlighting concentrated top holdings. SWISX: retain developed-market diversification, with unhedged currency and emerging-market coverage gaps explicit. SWAGX: retain only as a duration-bearing bond strategy; its issuer-reported historical loss contradicts any capital-preservation claim. None has a verified original paper entry. Updated reference NAVs do not establish entries, site performance or annual evaluation clocks.
Later adverse evidence, no-trades and missing observations will remain visible. Qualitative thesis assessments are separate from measured trading outcomes; unresolved data will never be replaced with zero or silently omitted.

05 / RULES BEFORE THE RESULT
The prospective protocol
Fixed dates and seven equal slots. Later outcomes cannot change the original rules.
Costs are model assumptions. Entry and exit each cost 0.10%, with a 0.25% per-side sensitivity. Initial model capital includes entry costs. Gross and net series use their own share quantities. Taxes excluded.
Price basis is fixed before entry. Raw regular-session first open to final close, with verified splits and dividend entitlements. No auction-price claim, adjusted-return double counting, or invented intraday stop execution. SPY uses identical dates, basis and costs.
Why valuations are still pending
A source and its applicable usage rights must cover all seven candidates plus SPY, raw regular-session open/close, splits, distributions and retained derived results. No end-to-end recurring valuation route has been demonstrated.
The October 18 refresh incorporates released CPI/PPI and later material issuer evidence. This editorial review is not an execution decision or evidence of a price advantage.
GS, JNJ and JPM still have no verified reference price in this edition. XLE, XLF and XLV closes are dated October 15; SHY is October 16. These observations are not proposed fills or a coherent portfolio valuation.
A separately reviewed activation and scoring implementation must enforce public-before-entry timing and evidence completeness. This editorial schema deliberately rejects fills and performance events.
No verified source, incomplete pre-entry review, no qualified public record before 2026-10-19T13:30:00Z, or no supported activation means no trade. Never backdate entry or replace a losing selection.
If a future supported, prospectively activated paper position lacks exit or corporate-action evidence at evaluation, retain it as unresolved, show the count and withhold aggregate returns. Append any later evidence and correction; never silently drop it.
Accounting, aggregation & outcome definitions
With initial model capital C inclusive of entry costs, per-side decimal cost c and raw entry price P, net initial shares = C / (P × (1 + c)). Apply verified splits to shares. Net ending wealth = ending shares × raw exit price × (1 − c) + entitled cash distributions. Net return = net ending wealth / C − 1. Run this separately for c = 0.001 and 0.0025.
Gross initial shares = C / raw entry price. Apply the same split and distribution entitlement rules. Gross return = (gross ending shares × raw exit price + gross entitled cash distributions) / C − 1. Use the same independently calculated gross and net conventions for SPY.
Credit only distributions for which the position was entitled under the ex-date/holding convention, including receivables payable later. Require amount, currency, ex-date and supporting source. Do not reinvest weekly cash distributions and do not also use a dividend-adjusted price series. Apply verified split ratios to share quantities at their effective date; preserve every corporate-action input and source. An unexplained price discontinuity is unresolved, never assumed to be a gain or loss.
Seven equal slots, with 0% model USD cash for predeclared no trades. Only complete cohort returns can be compounded. Resolved-only positive rates, benchmark outperformance, average gain and average loss require visible sample counts; no unresolved slot is hidden. Positive, negative and flat are based on unrounded net return above, below or equal to zero.
Cadence
Research updates are planned for Sundays, with a review of prior ideas. Actual publication dates show what is available; a planned update is not a guaranteed result.
Weekly entry exit
First regular-session open of the stated week to its final regular-session close. Use exchange holidays and early-close times. If publication misses the entry cutoff, skip that cohort rather than backdate it.
Price basis
The fixed model uses raw regular-session open/close observations, not an assumed official auction print. Source semantics must be verified. Do not switch an active cohort to a close-only or adjusted-price convention after seeing results; an unsupported convention means no trade.
Activation
Research publication does not activate a paper position. This editorial schema cannot record entries or calculate performance. A separately reviewed valuation implementation, verified source coverage and pre-entry public decision record are required. If requirements are not met before the entry cutoff, every unqualified slot remains no trade.
Return calculation
For this fixed raw-price model, adjust share quantities for verified splits and add only entitled cash distributions. Never use a dividend-adjusted price in addition to those distributions. Gross and cost-inclusive net series each retain their own starting share count.
Costs
Illustrative 0.10% per side, with 0.25% sensitivity. Initial model capital includes entry cost, so net shares equal capital divided by the product of entry price and (1 + per-side cost). Taxes are excluded. These are fixed model costs, never observed execution costs.
Benchmark
Use SPY over identical dates and price basis for a common equity-market comparison, with comparable model costs. SHY is defensive and SPY is not its risk-matched benchmark; also compare SHY with uninvested USD cash at a disclosed 0% model return. Long-term funds use their stated category benchmarks, separately from weekly results.
Aggregate
If showing a weekly model portfolio, predeclare seven equal slots and 0% model cash for no-trade slots. Report concentration and overlap prominently; this is a research basket, not a suitable personal allocation.
Right wrong
Report net-positive rate, benchmark-outperformance rate, average gain, average loss, all-cohort cumulative result and sample count. Positive return and benchmark outperformance are distinct tests. Narrative thesis assessment is separate from numerical outcome.
Exceptions
Retain all losses, no-trades, halts, delistings and missing observations. Missing prices remain unresolved, with the unresolved count visible. No intraday stop/target execution is claimed from daily bars. Narrative invalidation never silently changes the fixed statistical exit.
Long term
Do not rebuy or resell mutual funds weekly. Original entries remain unestablished, so annual evaluation has not begun. Weekly review covers thesis, mandate, costs and risk. Reopened February/March SEC summaries corroborate issuer fees and minimums; later supplements could not be exhaustively verified because issuer-linked document viewers were unreadable. Intermediary terms and current prospectuses must be checked separately.
Staleness
Display this edition's research cutoff, each observation date, actual verified publication time and the separately predeclared next editorial review. October 15 SPDR closes and October 16 SHY/fund observations are dated context, not a uniform latest-close valuation. A missed update keeps the prior edition and timestamp with an overdue warning.
Evaluation deadline
At the fixed lookback deadline in the protocol, report every slot. Without qualified pre-entry activation, record no trade. If a future supported, prospectively activated position lacks required observations, show unresolved and withhold aggregate returns. Append later evidence and corrections without deleting the original status.
Research updates are planned for Sundays, with a review of prior ideas. Actual publication dates show what is available; a planned update is not a guaranteed result. Failures keep the last successful edition and its real timestamp, with an overdue warning. Original analysis and limited factual citations are separate from systematic market-data collection; source coverage and applicable usage rights must be verified before a recurring valuation workflow.
